If you are a fan of Tolkien’s novels, then New Zealand might be just the place for you.
For many people, it's paradise. Several friends of Sovereign Man live there, and they generally love it. They like how remote New Zealand is. They love its dramatic scenery, its sandy beaches and its verdant mountains.
They were much less happy during the pandemic, however. New Zealand, similarly to Australia, largely turned into a prison, as almost no one was let in or out.
But for many other people, New Zealand is just too expensive and waaaay too remote.
Tax-wise, the country is a mixed bag. There's no capital gains tax, except for some specific cases, so if you're a trader or investor, it can be a pretty good place to be.
There’s also no inheritance tax.
At the same time, corporations are taxed at a flat 28% rate, and personal tax rate reaches 39%.
One thing that’s not so expensive in New Zealand is college education, which is why New Zealand may work well for students. The University of Auckland, for example, is well-ranked internationally, but doesn’t cost nearly as much as comparable universities in the United States.
In short, international students could get a quality education at a reasonable price there.
As for the negatives… One drawback to living there is “tall poppy syndrome”.
New Zealanders are known for having a fairly socialist outlook. For example, many people made a ruckus over the fact that New Zealand granted American entrepreneur Peter Thiel citizenship there.
In other words, the locals may not be big fans of high net worth individuals, especially if they are also quite well known in the public sphere (think Peter Thiel, et al.).
However, if the country's remoteness does not bother you, and if you just want to lay low while enjoying the country’s natural splendor, then New Zealand might be worth considering.
Although, we can’t promise you won’t get locked in there during another episode of the pandemic…
