The US government just posted a $2 trillion deficit for fiscal year 2026. Almost nobody noticed.
Treasury released the final numbers: $2 trillion, $220 billion worse than last year. Mandatory spending — Social Security, Medicare, and interest on the debt — already exceeds 100% of tax revenue. They could furlough the entire military, close every national park, and lay off the TSA and still run a deficit.
Interest alone was $1.36 trillion. That’s a quarter of all tax revenue and more than the entire military budget.
Congress stayed silent. No hearings, no outrage, no plan.
Voters say affordability is their top issue. They don’t connect the dots. Obamacare was supposed to make healthcare cheaper. Premiums went up. Medicaid now costs roughly a trillion dollars a year because people can’t afford the “affordable” system.
The pattern is consistent: everything the government touches gets more expensive. Housing, education, food, energy, healthcare.
Most likely next step is more spending, more debt, and eventually the Fed printing money to cover it. Prices keep rising. Nobody in charge takes the blame.
A government can print trillions of dollars overnight. It cannot print an ounce of gold or a barrel of oil. That’s why real assets hold their value when the currency behind them doesn’t.
You don’t need to panic. You need optionality — gold, oil, and the companies that produce what governments can’t conjure out of thin air.
Washington will keep spending money it doesn’t have. Make sure your savings aren’t made of the same paper.
