September 11, 2001 started like any other Tuesday. I was a young lieutenant, a year out of West Point, standing in a motor pool for vehicle checks. Fifteen minutes later the world was different.
Those mornings stick. They’re called flashbulb memories. 9/11. Lehman weekend in 2008. The week COVID became real.
There will be others. Not towers — maybe a bond market that breaks in real time, foreigners dumping Treasuries, yields surging, a country staring at a screen in disbelief because it isn’t supposed to happen here.
Before that Tuesday, Washington ran a surplus. Then came twenty years of war, trillions in spending, and a borrowing spree that never stopped. The debt is now over $40 trillion. Foreigners are buying less. Allies are diversifying.
You cannot stop a flashbulb morning. You can decide, on an ordinary Tuesday, not to keep every option in one system. That is a Plan B. Hope you never need it.
